Terrific start to the season

In a strong start to the season we posted 7 wins from the 8 games contested.

Congratulations Chris Powza

400 games, and counting!

Special shout out to Chris Powza, who today played his 400th game for the Club. Now that’s getting to rarefied territory.
No one epitomises what a Club man is more than Powza.
Totally selfless, team & club orientated & just a ripping bloke to boot.

OH NOOOOO

Spare a thought for Craig Hockley

… who ruptured his Achilles as he was racing, figuratively speaking, towards home plate in the Div 4 Black game.
Craig said he felt like he had been shot in the calf as he fell to the ground about 10 feet from home plate, but like the great Club man he is, Craig literally crawled the rest of the way to touch home plate & score a run.
And, to make matters worse, Craig’s wife Suse captured the moment on video !!!

SHOUT OUT

Thank you to our many helpers

While there was plenty of on field stars, there was just as many off field ensuring our opening weekend got off to a flyer.
Big tip of the cap to Cameron Rogers who stepped up to take charge of our Thirds; Artie Pap who managed the Women’s Red team; Claudio Rodriguez who umpired the Div 4 Black game; past president Ross Neilson who umpired the Div 4 Red game; Daniel Page who umpired the Waverley Black Women’s game & ensured all the grounds were spick ‘n’ span; Tony Page who prepared the Main Diamond & cut all the grass on both the Main Diamond & Diamond 2.
Eloise England did a superb job with last night’s dinner as well as helping with Stephanie Evans, Chris Evans, Michelle Flintoff & Jacquie Bright operate the canteen on a crazily busy day.

SENIORS

Firsts Report

Won 7-4 vs Melbourne
WHAT A START Waverley opened the Summer season in spectacular fashion, headlined by one of, if not the best pitching performance in the Club’s history. Darcy Longstaff struck out 16, yes 16, in 6 innings. Micheal Nakamura, a former Major Leaguer, described it as an “awesome power” performance. Supplementing Darcy’s outing was two ‘no doubter’ home runs from Liam Evans & a massive blast from Tommy Maxfield as we rallied from a 4-2 deficit to defeat Melbourne 7-4.

Womens Report

Red win 12-6 vs Malvern, Black win 13-12 vs Upwey FTG
Our Women’s season opener saw the Black & Red teams rally from deficit to emerge winners. The Red team, backed by outstanding pitching from Alexi Smith & great hitting up & down the line-up posted a 7 spot in the last inning to win 12-6 against Malvern. The Black Team over an 12-4 deficit to score 9 runs in the last two innings to grab a 13-12 win. Terina Stokes & Paula Pap shone on the mound while Stacey delivered the clutch game clinching hit. Huge shout out Jordy & Artie Pap for coaching the Black & Red teams respectively. Way to go girls !!!

Seconds Report

Won 8-4 vs Melbourne
The 2nds kicked off the season with a solid 8-4 win vs Melbourne. We were a little bit rusty in parts but it’s good to start Round 1 with a W and blow out the cobwebs. Jamie Pap gave us a quality start on the bump before handing over to Tyler Evans who did a great job to close the game out. We had a good balance of aggression and discipline with the bat and blew the game open with 5 runs in the second inning. Pagey had a two hit, three RBI game, Shak registered two hits and Ned and Tyler had 2 RBIs each. Shout out to Jacko who bunted for a hit in the 2nd to get us rolling

Thirds Report

Lost 10-7 vs Melbourne
A late game fightback wasn’t enough for the thirds today, finishing up on the wrong side of a 10-7 score line. We gave up six runs on just one hit in the first inning as we struggled to find the strike zone. But Josh (White) and Josh (Puyk) pounded the zone for the next four innings and gave us a chance to get back in the game. Unfortunately six runs was too much of a head start, despite us outhitting Melbourne with nine hits to their three. Multi hit games to Ethan, and Mitch, and a big knock to Josh P we’re the highlights.

Fourths Report

Win a tight one 4-3 vs Melbourne
4’s WIN … 4’s WIN … brilliant effort from all the guys today in a tight 4-3 win over a very experienced (and older) Melbourne team. Too many good things to mention them all, however hits throughout the order plus the pitching of Cam Branson & Corey Adams was outstanding, as was the catching of Sam Walk. Happy Coach 🙂

Masters Report

Won 14-3 vs Monash/Ormond Glenhuntly
Masters got off to a good start, keeping the Waverley are Winners theme going, bringing home the chocolates 14-3. Matthew O’Regan started for us and in two innings got 16 less K’s than Darcy Longstaff in the ones. Fair warning, it’ll take Matt another 60 innings to accumulate those 16 K’s (may just fall short to be fair). First gamers (of baseball ever) Pete Miller and Matt Tippett had good games, Pete likely to poll votes in round 1 with a good hit and a good play at 2B. Likely to get a fine for wearing a softball helmet with face guard. James Sharp likely round 1 MVP with a big first inning hit and pitching two digs. Good all round game, had a bit of fun. All got a good laugh from the foul tip Tim Coad copped. Special mention to whoever gave him a bag of frozen onions (yes, onions) to ice it. Nothing more fun than the sound of a clean foul tip on bare skin from a pitcher with a bit of giddy up. Giggles all round. Andy
