Waverley Firsts Report
The Ones won 12-1 @ Newport today with Jamie Papanicolaou starting on the mound backed up by great defensive plays and solid hitting from the Wildcats. Jamie earned the win throwing 78 pitches over 7 innings, with 5 strike outs & zero walks while holding Newport to just a single run.
Finn Weichard closed the game with 2 strike outs and no runs over 2 innings.
Multiple hitters were Mitch Homfray with 4 including a double, Damon Hill with 3 hits, Liam Evans with 2 hits (including a double) and Mohi Kahui (including a spectacular slide into 1st base) & Ned Hargreaves also with 2 hits each.
Jordan Ley picked up a double and Mitch Lording picked up a single.
Liam drove in 3 runs, Mohi drove in 2, Jordy also drove in 2 and Damon 1.
With score at 4-1, the bottom of the 6th saw some outstanding fielding. With 2 on base Ned took a diving line drive catch in left field which stopped any advance by the runners. Then with bases loaded Mitch Homfray took a line drive catch and doubled the runner trying to get back to second to end the innings and snuff out any chance of Newport scoring.
Our defence continued in the bottom of the 8th when with loaded based, Jordy made the third out, gloving the ball on the third base line and making the long throw across the diamond.
The Wildcats go into next week with 4 wins from 4 games against Blackburn at home on Sunday.
Go Wildcats!
Waverley Seconds Report
Today we travelled out to the graveyard to take on a Newport team we haven’t played for a number of years.
Knowing the conditions were going to be pretty tough, we just couldn’t adjust as well as Newport did and found ourselves behind early in the game.
We got runners on all day but just couldn’t get the big hit when we needed like in the first few weeks.
Big game next week VS Blackburn, but a chance to get back on the winners list.
Waverley Metro Major 1 Report
A vignette from Napier Park this afternoon.
After a NW Titan batter late in the game trudged back to the dugout he was heard to mutter ‘how am I supposed to hit that’.
He shouldn’t feel too bad as none of the preceding 5 batters could also work out the guy on the hill.
At least they can all dine out on the fact they got to face an ex Major Leaguer!!
Micheal Nakamura wound back the clock with a 6K performance over 2 innings in his pitching debut for the Wildcats !!!
Not a bad guy to call out of the pen to shackle the opposition after Ethan Nakamura allowed one unearned run over his 5 innings
Waverley Rookie Report
What about this quintet of budding young stars who made their representative debuts tonight for our great Club.
While some of their rivals looked old enough to be L plate drivers, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm, spirit or resilience of our youngest Rookie Ballers.
It was an all too familiar story as our 6 Rookie Ball teams underlined why Waverley’s Junior program has been without peer for 65 years.
And, what was particularly pleasing was too see a bunch of our current teenage players – Cam Branson, Brodie Trevean & Phoenix Kuilboer selflessly give up their time to help our Rookie Ballers.
